Auditioning for JJ Abrams

Aquariums are strange places. You’re technically underwater but bone-dry, watching creatures who seem to clock your presence. Maybe they don’t. Maybe they do. This one definitely looked like it was sizing me up.

The light caught its scales just right—a little flash across the tank, the kind of accidental glow that pretends it’s a lens flare from a JJ Abrams Star Trek film. Except it wasn’t intentional, or dramatic. Just a rogue reflection doing its thing.

Unfortunately for this slippery dude, the only JJ in the room was me.
And I don’t direct blockbusters. I just notice stuff.

Taken on 12 August, 2017 at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.

Seen something small worth noticing?

Reply with your own photo. I’d love to see it. There are just 3 rules: one image, no overthinking, bonus points for mediocre lighting.

P.S. I sell prints of my Probably Nothings. If you see something in the newsletter not for sale, let me know.

🪟 Probably Nothing is an every-so-often photo log where each issue features one small moment that was… well, probably nothing. Think morning light on a coffee maker, or the way a cloud decides to be dramatic on an otherwise unremarkable day.
